yes to this except that The Doctor told River his name when they got married in “The Wedding of River Song” right? And she knew it during Silence in the Library. Also, Idk I think it could make sense with John Hurt as the lost regeneration during the Time War, like he was the one who killed all the Time Lords but he didn’t call himself the Doctor because he broke that promise
One thing. John Hurt isn’t the “forgotten” regeneration.There is not “forgotten” regeneration between the 8th and 9th doctor. If anything, he’s the Valeyard (most likely, because they actually mentioned that during the episode.) The Valeyard is the physical manifestation of the Doctor’s darker side. (Kinda like the Dream Lord in Amy’s Choice). It shows up a few times in the original series.
It’s generally referred to as being the Doctor’s penultimate regeneration (between his 12th and 13th). In some press releases, John Hurt has explicitly said he is playing “a side” of the Doctor.

Everybody please stop saying Moffat is “taking away” things. If anything, he’s adding some new twists on some classic storylines (The Great Intelligence, The Valeyard), and bringing back things that haven’t been referenced in YEARS. (The Mondasian Cyberman, as opposed to the Cybus Cybermen that RTD created.)
Last thing.
The man has been a Doctor Who fan since before most of us were born. I don’t think his intention is to ruin the damn franchise. Yes, he writes things that not everybody likes. (Including myself at times.) But stop screaming “MOFFAT RUINS EVERYTHING FOR THE LULZ”.
